Expendable cage

An expandable cage is an adjustable interbody fusion implant that can be expanded in situ to restore disc height, spinal alignment, and stability, while promoting bone fusion.

An expandable cage is an advanced interbody fusion device designed to be inserted in a compact form and expanded inside the intervertebral space during surgery. This feature allows surgeons to achieve precise restoration of disc height, optimal spinal alignment, and improved segmental lordosis with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.

Once positioned, the cage is mechanically expanded using a specialized instrument, enabling controlled height adjustment to match patient-specific anatomy. This reduces the need for excessive endplate preparation and helps minimize the risk of subsidence or implant migration.

The cage is typically filled with bone graft material (autograft, allograft, or synthetic substitutes) to support osseointegration and long-term fusion. Its design includes large graft windows, anti-migration surfaces, and load-bearing structures to ensure stability and effective fusion.

Expandable cages are commonly manufactured from titanium, PEEK, or titanium-coated materials, offering high strength, durability, and excellent biocompatibility. Some designs also provide radiolucency (PEEK) for better postoperative imaging.

These cages are widely used in minimally invasive spine surgeries (MIS), degenerative disc disease, spinal instability, trauma, and deformity correction, offering a versatile and patient-specific solution for spinal fusion.
